Veterans Day: Thank You to All Who Served

blankOn this 11-11-11, America Comes Alive honors our military.

What we now call Veterans Day started out as Armistice Day. The signing of the peace agreement with Germany to end World War I was to go into effect “at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.”

After World War II, the name of the day was changed to Veterans Day and dedicated to all who served to help keep our country strong and safe.
In honor of Veterans Day, I have searched out what might be a good reminder of our military and its past. This morning I read about a great website (and museum, if you’re in the Chicago area): The Pritzker Military Library with galleries that tell numerous stories.

When I thought about some of the more interesting military-related stories I’ve written, I thought of these two that might interest you:

One is about the invention of the Mae West life preserver, crucial to saving lives in World War II. The Mae West Life Preserver.

The second story concerns how one woman built up the canine corps at the beginning of World War II: The Government Asked for Pets for Defense in the 1940s.

A deep thank you to all those who have served our country. Your efforts keep the country strong and safe. blank
