Woman appointed as Pres Kennedy’s personal physician Jan 26, 1961

On January 26, 1961, President John F. Kennedy appointed Dr. Janet Travell as his personal physician. This was the first time a woman had held that post. Kennedy suffered from persistent back pain, and Dr. Travell had a specialty in managing this type of health condition. After Kennedy’s assassination, Travell retained her post, becoming President Lyndon B. Johnson’s personal physician.
