Texas Secedes Feb 1, 1861

On February 1, 1861, Texas became the seventh state to secede from the Union.  A state convention was held and revealed 166 in favor of secession and only eight opposed. Sam Houston, governor at the time, was a Unionist but could not stem the tide. Because Houston refused to take an oath of allegiance to the Confederacy, he was replaced by his lieutenant governor later in the year.
