September 5, 1975, Gerald Ford was target of an assassination attempt

On September 5, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford was the target of a failed assassination attempt in Sacramento, California.  The shooter  was Lynette Fromme. She was carrying a handgun, but before she got her shot, she was brought down by the Secret Service. “Squeaky” Fromme was a member of the notorious Charles Manson group. She hoped that assassinating the President would endear her to Manson. She is still in prison today.
