On September 14, 1901, U.S. President William McKinley died of gunshot wounds he suffered after being shot on September 6 by a deranged man at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. Vice President Theodore Roosevelt had to be located in the Adirondacks. He immediately returned and was sworn in as President.
