On September 28, 1942, General “Hap” Arnold ordered the development of two aircraft powerful enough to make bombing runs from the U.S. to targets in Europe. Neither design was completed during WWII; both were finally finished in 1946. The failure to get these planes built on time led to the establishment of an autonomous Air Force, which has been critical for American success.
