November 29, 1864, Sand Creek Massacre

On November 29, 1864, the Colorado militia massacred a village of peaceful Cheyenne Indians who were camped near Sand Creek in Colorado Territory. This set off a long series of retaliatory attacks by Indians. Colonel John Chvington hoped to make a name for himself. He thought the attacks would bring him support of white settlers as well as the military. Instead, the event stirred up unending trouble between the settlers and Native Americans.
