November 19 1863 Gettysburg Address

On November 19, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln provided “a few appropriate remarks” at the dedication of the military cemetery at Gettysburg.  In just 272 words, Lincoln brilliantly and movingly reminded a war-weary public why the Union had to fight and win the Civil War. The main speaker spoke for two hours, as was customary. Lincoln spoke for just a few minutes, but his remarks have been well-remembered ever since.
