On April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth, an actor and Confederate sympathizer, fatally shot President Abraham Lincoln while Lincoln was enjoying a play at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C. The shooting came only five days after General Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, effectively ending the Civil War.
