On June 9, 1973, the race horse, Secretariat, won the Belmont Stakes and became the first Triple Crown winner since Citation in 1948. Secretariat set a world record, running the mile-and-a-half race in 2:24. Secretariat was the overwhelming favorite going into the Belmont, but no one could have predicted that Secretariat would cross the finish line an amazing 31 lengths ahead of the second- and third-place winners. The horse was raised in Doswell, Virginia, by owner Penny Tweedy.
