June 15, 1775 GW accepts command of the Continental Army

On June 15, 1775, George Washington, at the request of the 2nd Continental Congress, agreed to lead the Continental Army. He had distinguished himself as a commander for the British army in the French and Indian War of 1754. But by 1774, Washington had joined the Continental Congress as a delegate from Virginia. On July 3, 1775, Washington officially took command of the poorly trained and under-supplied Continental Army. Ultimately, they were victorious.
