Jan 9, 1972, Queen Elizabeth ship destroyed by fire

On January 9, 1972, the ship known as Seawise, formerly the RMS Queen Elizabeth, was destroyed by fire.  Built in 1938, it was the largest passenger steamship ever constructed. During World War II, the Queen Elizabeth transported troops. Then in 1968, the ship was sold, eventually to a Hong Kong businessman as a floating university. It caught fire while being refitted. Firefighters fought the blaze for two days but eventually the ship sank to the bottom of the harbor.
