On January 4, 1974, President Richard Nixon refused to hand over tape recordings and documents related to Watergate. These items had been subpoenaed by the Senate Committee investigating the matter. This marked the beginning of the end of his Presidency. Richard Nixon resigned from office in disgrace eight months later.
