Hoover Dam starts powering electricity for LA Oct 9, 1936

On October 9, 1936, the Hoover Dam was switched “on” and began harnessing the power of the Colorado River to send electricity over lines to power lights in Los Angeles, 266 miles away. Generating electricity was actually a secondary purpose of the Dam; the primary reason for having built it was to collect, preserve, and distribute water to the very dry Southwest.
