On February 9, 1971, pitcher Leroy “Satchel” Paige became the first Negro League veteran to be nominated for the Baseball Hall of Fame. He was inducted later that year. He was invited into the Major Leagues (Cleveland Indians) when he was 42. He pitched his last pro game at 59. Paige was known for his fastball, showmanship and the longevity of his playing career. He also had great commentary: “Don’t look back. Something might be gaining on you.”
