On February 4, 1938, Walt Disney released Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, his first full length animated feature. Those whom he consulted beforehand felt he would fail, but Disney pursued his plan, borrowing most of the $1.5 million necessary to make the film. When it opened, critics loved it, remarking on his innovative use of story, color, sound, and background. Dopey was a particular crowd-pleaser. Shortly after it opened, it grossed $8 million, remarkable for that day.
