On February 29, 1940, Gone with the Wind was honored with eight Oscars by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Hattie McDaniel was among the winners for her portrayal of “Mammy,” a housemaid and former slave. It was the first time any African American was permitted to attend the ceremony. She was very gracious in her remarks and opened the door for others.
