On February 22, 1777, Revolutionary War leader and Georgia’s first Provisional Governor Archibald Bulloch died under mysterious circumstances. Georgians were in fear of an imminent British invasion and granted Bulloch broad powers to counter it. He died about 3 weeks later; poisoning was suspected. Bulloch was great-great-grandfather of America’s 26th president, Theodore Roosevelt. Theodore Roosevelt’s son, Archibald, and Bulloch County, Georgia, were both named in his honor.
