Feb 3, 2005 Alberto Gonzales becomes first Hispanic AG

On February 3, 2005, Alberto Gonzales won Senate confirmation as the nation’s first Hispanic attorney general. Gonzales was the son of migrant workers in Texas who grew up to join the U.S. Air Force and eventually attend the Air Force Academy. He received his law degree from Harvard. As a George Bush appointee, he defended Bush’s domestic eavesdropping program. In 2007 was under scrutiny by a Senate Judiciary Committee. He resigned from office later that year.
