Feb 2, 1887 Groundhog Day begins

On February, 2, 1887, Groundhog Day was celebrated for the first time in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. If a groundhog comes out of its hole on this day and sees its shadow, there will be 6 more weeks of winter; no shadow means an early spring. The tradition arrived with Germans immigrants. In Germany, they used hedgehogs as meteorologists, but groundhogs were easier to find in Pennsylvania.  The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club makes a three-day party of the event.
