On December 10, 1869, the Territory of Wyoming voted to give women the right to vote. The territory had over 6,000 men and about 1,000 women. The Wyoming legislators were hoping the resulting publicity would attract more people—particularly single women—to the area. The passage of the amendment made Wyoming the first territory or state in the history of the nation to grant women this fundamental right of citizenship.
