On January 20, 1863, the Civil War event known as the “Mud March” began. Union General Ambrose Burnside’s Army of the Potomac began an offensive against General Robert E. Lee’s Army that had to be halted prematurely. Heavy rain left the men slogging ineffectively through mud.
