On June 18, 1923, the first Checker Cab rolled off the production line at its new factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The company that was to become the Checker Cab Manufacturing Company began in Joliet, Illinois as an auto-making company. Immigrant Morris Markin lent money to try to save a friend’s struggling business, but later on, he had to absorb it. He turned it into the Checker Cab Manufacturing Company, and the factory was moved to Kalamazoo.
