On January 5, 1933, construction began on the Golden Gate Bridge. It would take more than four years to complete what was then the world’s longest suspension bridge (4,200-feet). During construction, workers were challenged by strong ocean currents and heavy winds and fog. The bridge was named for the fact that it spans the Golden Gate Strait where San Francisco Bay opens to the Pacific Ocean; it connects San Francisco to Marin County across the way.
