On December 11, 1872, Buffalo Bill Cody started his stage career, launching his Wild West shows. Cody originally earned his nickname in the late 1860s when he agreed to provide buffalo meat for Union Pacific Railroad construction workers. He was then hired by the U.S. Army to be a frontier scout. He participated in many Indian wars, and later became a guide where he met the author who memorialized him in stories.
