On December 5, 1945, five U.S. Navy aircraft bombers, known as Flight 19, took off for a three-hour training mission from Ft. Lauderdale Naval Air Station. Two hours later, the squadron commander reported that their compasses had failed; their position was unknown. They never returned, and the search and rescue aircraft that was sent to find them was lost as well. No sign of any of the planes has ever been found, deepening the legend of the Bermuda Triangle.
