On April 22, 1954, Senator Joseph McCarthy began hearings investigating the United States Army, charging them as “soft” on communism. Though McCarthy had been hunting out Communists for years, this was the first time there were televised hearings. His recklessness, bullying and disregard for the truth were all on full view, and this turned sentiment against him. The hearings closed with no charges against the Army. In December 1954, the Senate voted to censure McCarthy for his conduct.
