April 13, 1997 Tiger Woods wins Masters

On April 13, 1997, Tiger Woods became the first person of color to win the Masters Golf Tournament at Augusta. (The first black golfer to compete there was Lee Elder in 1975. The first black member of the club was not admitted until 1990.) Woods was a golfing prodigy. He won many Amateur tournaments, and then played for Stanford, turning pro in August 1996. He was only 21 when he won the Masters just 6 months later.
