On November 15, 1806, Lt. Zebulon Pike was on his second exploratory mission along the foothills of the Rockies when he spotted a distant peak that was encircled by a cloud. Underestimating the scale of the peak, he and his men attempted to climb it in a day only to have to take shelter in a cave. Later the mountain was named Pike’s Peak in his honor.
