Johann Gottfried Galle discovered the planet Neptune Sept 23, 1846

On September 23, 1846, Neptune, the 8th planet from the sun, was discovered by German astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle  at the Berlin Observatory. The planet has a diameter four times that of Earth, and it has eight known moons and a ring system. In 1989, the U.S. spacecraft Voyager 2 was the first human spacecraft to visit Neptune.
