56 Delegates signed a copy of the Declaration of Independence

On August 2, 1776, 56 members of Congress signed an enlarged copy of the Declaration of Independence. The delegates signed by state; a few were absent, and a few refused to sign.  Exactly one month before this signing, Congress accepted a resolution that stated “Resolved: That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown…”
