July 28, 1932 Bonus marchers removed from DC

On July 28, 1932, President Herbert Hoover ordered General Douglas MacArthur to use the military to force the Bonus Marchers from the nation’s capital. Bonus Marchers were a group of a thousand World War I veterans seeking payments for money due them for their military service. MacArthur had them removed, and Hoover became increasingly recognized for his insensitivity to American citizens during the Depression.
