insulin isolated July 27, 1921

On July 27, 1921, Canadian scientists successfully isolated insulin–a hormone they believe could prevent diabetes–for the first time. Using dogs as a test subjects, they were able to create diabetic-like symptoms but bring the dogs back to a normal existence through insulin injections. Within only a year, the first human sufferers of diabetes were receiving insulin treatments. Countless lives were saved from what was previously regarded as a fatal disease
