On July 2, 1937, Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan were reported missing near Howland Island in the Pacific. Earhart set many aviation records, and in May, she and Noonan left for a west-to-east trip around the world. At this juncture, their next destination was Howland Island, a tiny U.S.-owned island that was just a few miles long. They could not find the island and lost radio contact. They were presumably lost at sea.
