June 24 1966 National Trafficand Motor Vehicle Safety Act

On June 24, 1966, the U.S. Senate passed what became the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. It was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson, and it created the nation’s first mandatory federal safety standards for motor vehicles. Consumer advocate Ralph Nader deserves much of the credit for promoting this bill.
