Journalist with Custer is killed at Little Big Horn June 12, 1876

On June 12, 1876, journalist Marcus Kellogg, traveling with Custer’s 7th Cavalry, filed one of his last dispatches before being killed at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Kellogg was a telegraph operator-turned-journalist, moving to Bismarck in Dakota Territory in 1873 where he was hired by the Bismarck Tribune. He met George Custer on a train returning from the east. Custer invited Kellogg to come with him as his Cavalry left for Little Big Horn. Neither survived.
