On May 25, 1975, the grizzly bear was added to the list of animals needing protection under the Endangered Species Act. In the early 19th century, the grizzly bear inhabited most of the West. Lewis and Clark encountered many of the bears on their journey and were awed by their speed and power. But settlers killed or drove the bears out. To halt the decline, Congress gave them federal protection under the Endangered Species Act.
