On May 17, 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down their unanimous decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, ruling that racial segregation in public educational facilities is unconstitutional. This was a major victory for civil rights. The ramifications of it still echo throughout our society. It ultimately led to the abolishment of racial segregation in all public facilities and accommodations.
