On March 5, 1963, the Hula-Hoop received its official patent. The toy was first marketed in 1958, and sold an estimated 25 million Hula-Hoops in the first four months alone. The product was made by Arthur Melin and Richard Knerr who started a company called Wham-O in 1948. They are behind many, many popular products including the Frisbee (originally called the Pluto Platter), Silly String, Slip ‘n’ Slide, and the Hacky Sack.
