On March 4, 1829, Andrew Jackson held a notable open house at the White House. Politicians and celebrities were used to coming to a reception on inauguration day, but that year citizens swarmed the White House. Twenty thousand people arrived to congratulate the new president. The open house tradition finally ended in 1885 when Grover Cleveland suggested holding a parade for the people instead. He sat in the reviewing stand.
