On July 21, 1861, the war erupted along the Bull Run stream that runs through Virginia. Many consider the First Battle of Bull Run to be the true start of the Civil War. Both Confederates and Union soldiers were very inexperienced, but the Rebels managed to turn back the Union Army. The Federal soldiers found their retreat more difficult because spectators had come by buggy to watch the action.
