Civil War in Georgia May 14, 1864

On May 14, 1864, the action in the Civil War moved to Resaca, Georgia. This was among the early battles of Union General Sherman’s summer campaign to capture Atlanta. In the battle in Resaca, the Confederates held their ground so it was chalked up as a Rebel victory. The fighting elsewhere was also fierce. In the east, Union General Ulysses S. Grant took on Confederate General Robert E. Lee, while Sherman applied pressure on the Army of the Tennessee, under General Joseph Johnston, in the west.
