On May 2, 2011, Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the September 11th terrorist attacks in the U.S., was killed by U.S. forces during a raid on his hideout in Pakistan. He had been the target of a nearly decade-long international manhunt. The break came when the CIA noted that bin Laden’s courier was coming and going from a residential section of Abbottabad. They were not able to ascertain that bin Laden was there until after the raid.
