I graduated from an Iowa school in1963. We were given this newspaper( not called weekly reader) on Friday or Monday and then had a test on it at end of week. I think it was part of civics/ history class. I think it was “current events” or something like that.

Six decades later I still have still have a vivid memory of reading about the first Telstar communication satellites and how they communicated with ground stations around the world in the Weekly Reader, and thinking this was one of the most amazing and magical things I had ever read about. And I remember later proudly and expertly explaining to my family exactly how it was that we were able to watch Winston Churchill’s funeral live on television – as if it was a secret that only I among my siblings and parents knew because I had read about it in the Weekly Reader. I can still see in my mind the photograph of the satellite that the paper published.

I credit my ongoing life-long interest in current events and culture (as well as the not insignificant amount of money I spend on newspaper and magazine subscriptions) in part to the habits formed in elementary school reading the Weekly Reader – a publication that treated children with respect for their intelligence, curiosity and initiative, and never condescendingly.

I vividly remember looking forward to Weekly Reader when I was in elementary school. I was a voracious reader and the content of Weekly Reader was always interesting. I read it cover to cover and worked all the puzzles and games. our teachers would pass them out and sometimes we would read an article aloud and sometimes we would have quiet reading time. either way I enjoyed it. I especially liked the articles and photos of other countries and cultures. Fond memories for sure!!
