In reply to Marsha.

I'm so glad you found the Barrymore story and continued on. My most recent related story is how we came to have curb cuts (the sloping pavement at the corner of most city blocks). These ramps make all the difference to everyone from wheelchair-users to parents with strollers and UPS men with packages loaded on a dolly. Despite how important they are to us now, they came only after a hard fight: https://americacomesalive.com/curb-cuts-they-have-a-history/

In reply to Linda Dulin.

Linda,
Thank you so much for posting. The above story is actually very interesting... one of those, "Who knew?" stories.
One of the people I met this summer has MS and eventually shifted to a scooter-form of chair. I think she uses her cane at home. She applied for and got a service dog to help with picking things up and opening doors, etc. That may not be for you, but I think you'll enjoy Mary's story... Mary V. Hill: Retiring a Service Dog.

Thank You so much for the interesting report on the invention of the wheelchair. I have Multiple Sclerosis and my neurologist says that it could put me in a wheelchair permanently soon. I use one whenever I go somewhere that requires a lot of walking on hard surfaces or just will be a long hard day if I walk. The one I have is an old VA issued one that I picked up at a yard sale. I would love to have a new electric chair. but don't want to go there till I must!

Linda, thank you so much. Your sister-in-law's story is beautiful...and I'm saying that with full understanding that she has encountered challenges and much pain along the way. I'll hold all good wishes for her.

Very interesting. Thank you!

My sister-in-law has been in a wheelchair since she was 17... two weeks after high school graduation she was in a car accident and broke her neck. She went to college for a few years, quit, got married, had a baby, went back to school and became a third grade teacher, later getting her Masters in education. She divorced... lives alone. Her daughter has a Masters in Music... she's the band director at a high school. No quitters there!

Thank you... I like finding items that everyone takes for granted, and the story of the wheelchair was more interesting than a lot of things I've written about!

Thanks for posting.
