From 1976 till 1986 I served as organist at Pompton (Lakes) Reformed Church, where Terhune had been a member, and in whose cemetery he is buried. Terhune, the story goes, had been good friends with Gerrit Heemstra, the church’s longtime pastor, and had given (or left) him some clothing, including an expensive Savile Row tuxedo and tails that he had purchased in London, and a pair of leather gaiters. Long after both Terhune and Heemstra died, these items were discovered in the attic of the church’s parsonage on Hamburg Turnpike. Prior to the parsonage’s demolition in the late 1980s, I was able to rescue them and still have them in my possession.

Along with baby sitting and saving the allowance from my mother, I bought a little library. At 72 years old, I still love to read about the Sunnybank collies.

Of course! I’ve loved Terhune and his collies since I first cracked the paperback TAB edition of “Lad” when I was 10, and I collected very affordable Grosset & Dunlap hardcover copies of his books after that. They were beautiful and so smart. They felt so good to hug and they just stayed in their yard no fences . About 1954-58. , before dogs were pampered and tribunes professionally . I seldom see a collie today
