I, too, am glad you found the story about Rosenwald. They were so important in their day. And I would imagine your teacher was quite special. Thank you for posting!

That's an interesting question. There is still a Davis Academy Road in Prospect, Tennessee, so it would certainly be worth contacting the local library or the historical society for the area to see what local people know or remember. Otherwise, it looks as if most of the Rosenwald papers are housed at Fisk University. Some have been digitized, but there are so many papers there, it's probably worth contacting the Fisk Library Special Collections librarian to find out what he or she might know. I hope that helps. If you think of it later, let us know what you learn! All best, Kate

I am trying to locate a school whihc was listed as a Rosenwald school in a book published in Giles County by James Woods. However, I cannot locate the school on the Rosenwald list of school The name of the school is Davis Academy. It was a segregated school in rural Giles County, Prospect, TN, in the early 1900s. Do you have a link or some idea of how I can locate the school?

It is my understanding that Miss Virginia Randolph was associated with Rosenwald. Miss Randolph was the first Anna Jeanne Foundation Graduate of the superintendent curriculum and her program was used in many Rosenwald schools. Miss Randolph High School is still existing and also there is a museum next to the school honoring Miss Randolph. Lastly, on the capital grounds in Richmond is a wall with over 400 Virginia Women on it and within the circle is 11 statues. Miss Randolph and Maggie Walker are two of the 11 statues being honored.

You are so right! Not nearly enough people know about Rosenwald and his fine work for educating African-Americans in the South. I, too, will be looking for the film to be somewhere in my neighborhood.

Thank you for posting.

Luckily a new movie is just being released. Here's hoping it gets to theaters near me.
