Thank you for asking....I looked into it. Quite a few colors have been retired by Crayola, but my guess is that the rumor might have started with Indian Red. It was first available in the 1960s and retired in 1999. Feedback from teachers was that it was demeaning to Native Americans. Crayola says the red ingredient was from India. Some people may have thought that the disappearance of this red had something to do with the FDA banning Red Dye #3. The FDA's ruling did not affect crayons but perhaps that was where the story started. For more information on this very intersting topic: http://editorialstage.triviagenius.com/retired-discontinued-crayola-crayon-colors/

Fascinating background story. Crayola crayons have been garbage for decades, and there is a thorough recording of the change in processes written by a woman who worked at the plant, in answer to a Quora question. She details it all, (and quit due to the changes after man yyears on the job), and I wish I had saved the comment. Wait - I found the post. Not wanting to breach intellectual property, nor Quora terms and conditions, the question in Quora was, "Why are Crayola crayons not coloring as good as they used to?" (My Google search words were - Crayola crayons are terrible). It is well-worth locating it. There is no reason to buy Crayola crayons.

Thank you for the wealth of information, as well as the additional references and resources. This will be kept and referenced.

Hi
I don't have any expertise in collectibles. I took a quick peek at ebay and Etsy and both seem to show there is a market for these things... but I don't know what you were hoping for in value. You might check those two online places. If you sent a photo to one of the vendors, you might get some interest that way. They sound like fun things to have!

I have 4 tins of the collectors tins. 1. Collectors Color Limited Edition, which without having it right beside me is a Christmas one. It has a Bear Christmas ornament, 2. Is the 90th anniversary tin. 1903-1993. 3 Is a 1994 tin. 4 Is a 1992. None of these have been used. Does any of these have any value.

Thank you for your time.

Dear Mr. Welter,
Thank you so much for your thoughtful and knowledgeable comments. I truly appreciate people like you to take this type of time.
I'm in meetings this week but next week I will pull out my research on this article. I'll see where I may have gone wrong and make the corrections.
Thanks very much!
