I want to share this poem and link for anyone who has lost a part of their heart when it's that time for their forever pup. I hope that there will be a better understanding for this lovable breed. "Ready and Faithful"

I will lend to you for a while, a Doberman pup, God said
For you to love him while he lives and mourn him when he's dead.
Maybe for twelve or fourteen years, or maybe two or three.
But will you, 'till I call him back, take care of him for me?
He'll bring his charms to gladden you, and should his stay be brief,
You'll always have his memories as solace for your grief.
I cannot promise he will stay, since all from earth return,
But there are lessons taught below I want this pup to learn.
I've looked the whole world over in search of teachers true,
And from the folk that crowds life's land, I have chosen you.
Now will you give him all your love, nor think the labor vain,
Nor hate me when I come to take my Dobie back again.
I fancied that I heard them say "Dear Lord Thy Will Be Done",
For all the joys this Dobe will bring, the risk of grief we'll run.
We'll shelter him with tenderness, we'll love him while we may,
And for the happiness we have known, forever grateful stay.
But should you call him back much sooner than we've planned
We'll brave the bitter grief that comes, and try to understand.
If, by our love, we've managed, your wishes to achieve,
The memory of him and his love, will help us while we grieve.
When our faithful bundle departs this world of strife
We'll have yet another Doberman and love him all his life.

There was a lot of 'hype' back in the 70s--80s about how 'bad' the Dobe was. Never being one to buy into propaganda without first hand info, I got a male, red Dobe. He was the most intelligent, loyal, mild natured dog anyone could ask for. I've been a rabid Dobe fan ever since. They can be very protective of their 'people', but once assured that things are good, they go about their business. I had my big red boy for years until he succumbed to a heart problem. I loved him with all my heart and I KNOW the feeling was mutual.Dobes are wonderful dogs, the best.

I received this comment from a reader: Regarding the Doberman story, I noticed that all of the pictures were of dogs with docked ears. I don't know if the show circuit & AKC rules have changed (I hope so) -- it used to be that Dobies had to have docked ears to be shown. The breed does not have upright ears when they're born. A picture of a traditional Doberman litter would have shown that.

Docking is painful for the dog and I heard years ago it could also cause possible hearing problems. A lot of vets are now enlightened and won't dock ears as a matter of course.

Could we see "undocked" Dobies?

A photo has been added to the bottom of the post.
