You are so right, but the military had not yet figured out what to do for four-legged heroes...

Thank you for recognizing Chips for his contributions, which doubtless saved human lives.

Thank you for the information! I think that Chips only nipped him, but I get your point. Eisenhower could have ruled differently...and he probably had many reasons for what he decided but I have learned that the Eisenhower's weren't really dog people. See this story: Eisenhower's Dog, Heidi

I found that Major General James Ulio of the War Department notified William Thomas, the man who complained about dogs getting medals, and ruled that Chips had to give up the DSC but could keep her Silver Star and Purple Heart. However, as of 16 February 1944 no further awards would be made to animals, as there is no reward for "good boy, what a good boy." And Eisenhower could have easily ruled for the dogs, both as Supreme Allied Commander and later as President. But he didn't. I hope Chips bit him real good.

Several years ago, while researching an article on the use of colies during the first World War, I came across Chips. I was fortunate enough to be able to interview a member of Chips' immediate human family, John Wren. I went on to write the historical fiction book, "Chips: A Hometown Hero," published in 2004. This book recounts many of Chips' actual adventures. The book, still in print, is for ages 9 and up.

Thank you for featuring Chips in your blog. He was quite a dog!
